Driving a Yamaha 750, the young Lukasz Laskawiec became European Baja 2011 Champion in the quad category and Q4 class, after the last and conclusive round of the season at Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal.
The Polish guy, at his second consecutive participation in the UEM European Baja Championship, has asserted himself thanks to his tenacity and perseverance throughout the season and has well-deserved the title.
A praise also goes to the young Portuguese André Mendes and to the defending champion Rafael Acurcio who have tried hard all along but were defeated by mechanical problems to their Yamaha 450 and could do nothing against the strong Laskawiec.
The regular and fast Hungarian Zoltan Hangodi on his Yamaha 750 took advantage of this situation and he ranked the second overall place. The same did the Italian Giuseppe Cuffaro on his Yamaha 700, who completed the podium of the 2011 European Championship. The BRP Quaddy Offroadmotors Team won the absolute for the European.
Perfect race for Laskawiec who closes the Baja TT Idanha-a-Nova in 4h:23’:30”, especially after the withdrawal of his direct competitor for the title, Mendes.
Bad fall in the first kms for Pedro Mariano, forced to withdraw from the race and give up the third place in the Championship. Also the Italian Giammarco Fossà withdrew from the race due to a malfunction of the fuel pump in his Suzuki 450.
Bad luck for Graziano Scandola who, on the second day of the race, is forced to stop due to the breakdown of the battery of his Can Am after a brilliant first stage in which he was right behind the leaders.
The Baja TT Idanha-a-Nova, after a 316 km race on the beautiful hills of Beira Baixa, a Portuguese region on the borders of Spain, was won by Bertinho Pinto in 4h:01′:21″, followed by João Pedro Esteves Dias at 6′:53″ and David Jose do Espirito Santo Jacinto at 9’30”: a podium entirely occupied by the Portuguese specialists.
